Anyone who lives in the public eye knows how important it is to maintain an image that is consistent with the image they wish to project.
The fact remains that a very public conversation is taking place about you if you are a public figure or a celebrity. It's happening every day in the press and on social media. The only way anyone can affect the direction of that conversation is to become involved in it. You can embrace and use this to your advantage, or ignore it and have no control over its course whatsoever. It's your choice. We believe it is better to participate than it is to avoid.
Social Media is an immediate platform, meaning what people think and say is available instantaneously. This is great news to those who want to influence their image and keep it on track. It affords you the opportunity to influence perceptions about you and what is important to you.
We have all seen very public meltdowns in recent years via public media. They seem to be happening more and more often, and the sad part is they could have been avoided if a reasoned and responsible social media strategy been in place. Had a positive social media presence been established, chances are public good will would have helped those involved weather the storm. It's much easier to stop a fire before it starts than it is to try and put a fire out once it becomes a firestorm.
- Avoid Social Media and save yourself the trouble
- Become personally active, but educate yourself to the dangers and/or pitfalls.
- Become active, but have a professional take care of it and your image for you.
Let's start with number One: Avoiding Social Media.
That's not very realistic. It is everywhere and is unavoidable. The genie is out of the bottle. Avoidance will not change the course of a negative social media image or point of view that could be damaging to your reputation. And social media is not going away.
In fact, more and more people across the globe are becoming active every day. To avoid social media is to cede control over your image to those who have no business controlling your image.
Number Two: Become Personally Active. There are many examples of people in the public eye who have taken the time to educate themselves and have managed to avoid public embarrassment. They have embraced the social medium to not only enhance their public image, but to drive charities and causes that are important to them. Then there are those who have taken to social media and have done themselves more harm than good. If you are willing to invest the time and are inclined to become personally active and feel you can avoid the pitfalls inherent with this very public medium, then go for it.
Number Three: Become Active, but have a professional take care of it for you. There a many good reasons to outsource your social media presence to a social media professional. It's what we do. Many in the public eye make the mistake of tasking an assistant or secretary with their social media needs. While this may appear a simple answer on the surface, one has to question whether they are up to the task. Unless they are intimately familiar with social media and marketing, that idea is fraught with risks, not the least of which is the real possibility that an assistant probably could unknowingly post something that could come back to haunt you. Besides, more work for that secretary or assistant means less productivity across the board. Surely your image is more important than an after thought.
